One of the projects I’ve been working on is a project called Team: Awesome! basically my take on the early ‘90s 'Image Style’ comics. I showed my initial sketches to Matthew Price and told him about my idea. He liked it and sent me a plot. This was supposed to go in between other projects but since NYCC is fast approaching I decided to pencil the first six page to show people at the con. This is the first project I’ve draw traditionally in almost 4 years. A friend cut me a Masonite drawing board and it was nice to not be shackled to a computer. I’m looking for future projects so if you like this and have something for me please drop me a line.

I drew Batman at breaktime today at work. Too lazy to drag out my sketchbook & pencils, I drew him on a post it with a ballpoint pen.

I had to clean out my backpack this weekend so before I repacked it this morning I did one of those ‘what’s in my bag photos’. With minor variations this is pretty much what I carry everyday. The X-Men book I’ve had since the '80s and carry it with me everyday. I could study the art forever.

Samurai drawn with a kuratke brush pen. My small sketchbook is almost full, but it’s taken a beating. I’ve noticed wire sketchbooks bound on the short side tend to wear a little worse. This one lost a few lives when it got folded up in the car seat and bent. Still it’s a badge of pride to fill a sketchbook so I’m hanging in there. In the old days I’d get frustrated at a bad sketch and switch to a new book. Now I power on through and I’ve learned how to (sort of) fix bad drawings.

I’m reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson and decided to do a quick page of sketches inspired by the book this morning. I’ve loved Gibson’s writing for years and I really enjoy his modern work. His work has a fluorescent bulb feel that I enjoy. It’s not the best description but it’s the feeling you get when you get off a plane late at night in a large city and you’re looking for baggage claim in a washed out, overlit airport.

I got to work a little early and so I’m working on a comic page while I wait to clock in. I have my page taped to a piece of Masonite and yes, I’m listening to an old transistor radio. I’ll continue this page at lunch.

Today weirdellis and I went downtown and checked out the abandoned bank in the liberty national building. There was an article in the paper about how the ownership of the building is in dispute and it’s basically falling apart. The lobby was huge and there is bronze details everywhere. Check out the carving on this cashier window. We took the elevator to the 14th floor. It looked like it had been empty for 20+ years. Downtown Okc is in the middle of a boom, but the land some buildings are sitting on is worth more than the building. There is talk about what to do with this building, it’s beautiful, but it would take a pile of money to fix it and with oil prices plunging owners might have trouble getting tenants.

It’s hard to see, but here’s the rough to page 5. My friend Rick cut a drawing board small enough to fit in my backpack so now I can draw comics before work and during my lunch break.
