Duel from my sketchbook. Yesterday I watched Duel directed by Steven Spielberg. When I was a kid, I played a game called Car Wars. It was a board game of Mad Max style car combat and they would list their ‘inspiration’ in popular media in the back of the book. Duel was on that list, but I hadn’t seen it until last night. Duel is the story of a driver who gets harassed by a truck driver. Most of the film takes place with moving vehicles. Spielberg did a great job setting up the shots in a way that made it look great. Watching this, you can see why this film opened doors for him. Spielberg is a very technical filmmaker and it’s very obvious in Duel. I don’t think this the kind of film you watch over and over, but it’s definitely worth watching, especially if you enjoy the technical process of making a film.
