George Jefferson from my sketchbook. When I was a kid my favorite show was ‘The Jeffersons’. I didn’t understand the racial implications of ‘moving on up’ or calling his neighbor a ‘Honkey’ I just knew they were poor and now they were rich and George was alway hustling to ‘make it’.

A couple of drawings from my sketchbook from yesterday. There is only about 10 pages left in this sketchbook and I’m dreading finding a new one. The last few have been smaller spiral bound hardcovers and I’ve come to like that format, but they have been hard to find lately. The old standard is the black, hardcover strathmore, which make a nice book when finished, but can bee unwieldy to draw in. So many choices.

Someone posted a page in a forum asking for a critic and I did this quick thumbnail as an example of how the script could be drawn with a better sense of storytelling.

On March 26th, 1969 John Kennedy Toole drove to a deserted road in Biloxi, Mississippi and ran a hose from his exhaust, taking his own life. Toole was dealing with a variety of personal problems, including the rejection of his novel, “A Confederacy of Dunces”. His novel had gotten attention from publishers, but no one was willing buy it. Accounts of Toole’s mental state vary during the last few months of his life, but there is no doubt he was dealing with depression and possibly paranoia. Years after his death his mother found the manuscript and approached Walker Percy to read it. Walker liked it and convinced LSU press to publish it and in 1980 “A Confederacy of Dunces” won the Pulitzer Prize, validating Toole’s talent, his mother’s faith and Percy’s vision. It’s tempting to say had ‘Dunces’ been published in his lifetime things might have been different, but it is impossible to really understand why Toole took his life. John Kennedy Toole was cheated out of a long writing career and we have missed out what else the creator of ‘A Confederacy of Dunces” might have written had he not died on this day in 1969.

Ant-Man. As a kid, ant-man was one of my favorite characters. The idea you could shrink down to nothing appealed to a shy youth and the concept of an adventure in your own backyard appealed to my curious, but cautious personality.

"I’m still bad in math. I’m a lousy electrician– I couldn’t fix a plug. But I am interested in the other side of knowledge, the cultural side of knowledge and the truthful side of knowledge. I’m looking for the gaps that I know exist and of course, I’ll never get the answers, like everybody else. So I feel I live with very interesting questions." Jack Kirby
