atomic-flash: What to do during an A-Bomb attack - From the instructional pamphlet Protection from the Atomic Bomb issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1950 amid the Cold War and fears of an A-bomb attack from the Soviet Union. Print this out and save it! It may save your life. Most likely won’t but it might. If this fails, get in your fridge, it worked for Indy!

Dieselpunk Captain America from my sketchbook. I’m starting to think steampunk is played out. Not that it’s dead, some people will always wear top hats & wax their mustaches, I just think it’s become too mainstream. I’m looking towards Dieselpunk instead. Like the early days of cyberpunk & steampunk, the ideal is a little vague. But that gives it some edginess that makes it cool.

usnatarchives: Happy #NationalDonutDay! This poster advertised the awesome “Vitamin Donuts,” with their 25 units of vitamin B1, were meant to strengthen the population during wartime. Ultimately, the company was told it could call the product “enriched flour donuts,” but “vitamin donuts” was out. This poster is part of our traveling exhibit “What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam?” currently on display in the National Archives at New York City. Vitamin doughnut?!? Count me in!

Yukon on Wheels from my sketchbook. My High School reunion was this weekend and today we went to the local skating rink. This was a social hotbed of my youth and so it was neat to se the place. I was too busy to do any sketches today, but I did this sketch tonight from memory. Some details are wrong and stuff made up, but I tried to capture the feel of the space.

My friend wrote this in my 7th grade yearbook. My class reunion is this weekend. No one has been shocked that I draw comic books. My wife asked which of the girls in my class I dated. I told her none. This all may be related!

notpulpcovers: For many people, myself included, this is the very ideal of a vintage space gun. It’s got rings. It’s got vents. It’s got a sweeping design that conveys the poetry of space flight. It’s even got its name spelled out in a cool, 1950s font that’s underlined by lightning bolts. That’s right, lightning bolts! And did I mention it’s called the Pyrotomic Disintegrator? If anyone tries to say that’s not the best name for a ray gun ever, that person’s looking for a fight. The top Pyrotomic Disintegrator pistol is the first to be manufactured - it’s known as the candy-colored Pyro. The bottom pistol is the copper version manufactured in the later part of the 1950s - a more authentic space cadet look There was a Pyrotomic Disintegrator rifle manufactured by Pyro Plastics shortly after the pistol Toy Rayguns lists the Pyrotomic Disintegrator rifle as “being perhaps the rarest of all space rifles, The Pyrotomic Disintegrator Rifle is also the most beautiful. Powerfully sculpted with a fluted barrel and an undulating stock, this wonderfully designed toy exudes a sense of delicacy and techno-scientific power.” Both the Pyrotomic pistol and rifle are very hard to find in good condition. Having been made with brittle plastic makes the guns fragile and susceptible to cracking and breaking if dropped. The shooting mechanism was cheaply made and is often not working in the surviving guns. So, not only are the Pyrotomic guns considered the most beautifully designed, they are also the most scarce. Perhaps sometime in the future someone enterprising might recreate the guns based on G. C. Schaible’s 1953 patents - the question is, would the beauty of the designs carry without the 1950s sci-fi space age mystique? This is awesome looking.

This morning before work I finished my ‘90s style superhero team I’ve been creating in my sketchbook. I have complete back stories on all the characters, but I’m not sure I’ll ever do anything with them. I know everybody looks down on the classic 'Image Style’ nowadays, but I think with the right twist it could be awesome!

Pre work sketch of a airport terminal. It’s good practice for an artist to carefully observe your surroundings for future reference. Figure out how things go together. Than make drawings of environments from your imagination but use your observations to inform your drawings to give them more verssimitude.

Pre-work page of car doodles. I haven’t seen Fury Road (I know, I know) but Mad Max & Road Warrior had a big influence on me as a kid. One of the first paintings I did as a kid was a copy of a Mad Max ad I had clipped from the newspaper. We used to play a strategy game called Car Wars that was all about vehicular combat and my first car had a sticker that said I was a member of the North American Autoduel Association.

Doodle of a cat. I drew this while waiting at the doctors office. This weekend was busy, but didn’t feel productive. I went to the doctor on Friday, I am getting sick again and I want to get a handle on this early. Saturday Michelle had a headache and we went to a 50th anniversary party for a friend. They played ‘50s music and had good punch, but it wiped us both out so we bailed on a birthday party for my nephew. Too much energy & noise. Sadly I didn’t get near as much comic drawn as I needed. I should have been done with this project. If I wasn’t a co-owner I’d be fired for sure. But the writer is understanding and the work looks great and that what matters at this point. Still I feel like every line is caring stone, it should be faster. Hopefully this is a sign I’m in an 'improving stage’.
