Last night I solved a mystery that has puzzled me for years. When I was in high school in the early 80’s I went with a group of kids from my church on a road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma. One thing we did on the trip was to go to a mall (which I understand is now gone) called The Williams Center located in the bottom floors of an office building. There was a ice skating rink in the middle with all the usual mall stuff around it, including a small movie theater. Above the exit doors for the theater was horizontal sign that really caught my eye. It had black and white NYC skyline along the bottom and above it was some hand drawn text. I couldn’t remember what it said but I remembered it was The _______ of _______ A few years ago I tried to remember what it was, but couldn’t figure it out. I thought it was ‘The King of New York’ but the timeframe didn’t fit. I had convinced myself it was 'The Prince of the City’ but it didn’t seem right either. It might be my OCD tendencies that made me want to solve a puzzle that didn’t really matter, but I’ve always been obsessed with NYC, my Grandmother was from NY and that graphic really spoke to me. Maybe it was some sort of aesthetic seed growing on me. Last night while I was watching King Kong '76 I was reading some reviews and one was a list of great NYC movies. And there it was ’ The Pope of Greenwich Villiage’. The text was laid out a little different, straight in a horizontal line, but there is no doubt it’s the movie.
