For day three of my artists training one exercise I did was to copy a couple of pages of a Jack Kirby comic. I chose Strange Tales 114 because it’s part of the Human Torch Essential TPB, but also because years ago I attended a seminar by Jim Shooter on how to create comics and he used this story as an example when he was explaining storytelling. I really only copied the figures and just as mannequins to try and get some energy into my figures.

All this studying shapes got me thinking about monster shapes and so I drew a page of giant monsters. On the weekly trip to the grocery store I picked up Godzilla: King of the Monsters on DVD. I’ve never seen it and it might be tonight’s movie.

Day two of my ten day ‘art sabbatical’ I’m reading Simplified Drawing for Planning Animation and working on gesture drawing. These are a few page of an exercise from the book.

My other blog
As part of evolving my art I have created a blog cataloging my old comic art samples. Starting with the oldest I am posting the art and telling the story of each sample. Right now I have the early work posted, from before I attended any cons. You can check it out at:

10 days off
I am taking 10 days off work to give myself time to draw and study with an eye towards evolving my art.
Today was the first day and I studied Bridgman's Life Drawing. I copied some of the drawings and made notes.
Last week I went through FORCE and I felt that was very helpful in evolving how I look at gesture. Many of the things I learned were reinforced by principals Bridgman wrote about.
I also went an saw X-Men: Days of Future Past, which was good, but didn't help my drawing. The next nine days will be more focused.
10 days off work! Spent the morning drawing, now I’m at the first showing of X-Men! #xmen #daysoffuturepast
